The Ballad of Ian Curtis ~ Luke Doucet & White Falcon
|Just got the brand new album, Luke Doucet & The White Falcon, Steel City Trawler. Plenty of Luke’s trade mark twangin’ guitar with nods to all the greats in each moment at the gear end of this but for there is so much wonderfully new, going beyond the trademark. Take one the album’s standout tracks “The Ballad of Ian Curtis,” where Doucet pays tribute to the late Joy Division frontman who famously had trouble with the ladies and it had me loving it from the git go! The album is well steered away from becoming a sappy country-tune drone, much of Steel City Trawler features meaty guitar riffs with just a splash of twang. Hope you’ll enjoy too!

I Can’t Quit You Baby ~ The Otis Rush Blues Band
I spent most of this day without any heat in the old office here at the Flimwell Papers high atop the Waterloo Wine Building….when the furnace…er boiler repair man showed it was time to head on home…tube strike and all…but I whiled away the hours listening to a new old friend. I just bought in vinyl again the three volume set, Chicago/The Blues/Today!. And came across this lovely gem on volume 2, just a mighty fine and worthy the price alone for this version of “I Can’t Quit You, Baby” that Led Zepplin would later copy note for note on their first album. If you don’t own this set and haven’t wandered down the Blues highway too far…get it….I did 40 years ago and it’s still worth it!
