Bus Stop ~ The Hollies
I was listening to some Bulgarian women’s choral music and I remembered how Graham Nash said this work had inspired his sense about harmonies….and it was a really a London kinda day…here when he comes in on this you know that Graham Nash gets this soaring feeling in this one, not Allan Clarke was a slouch, and he was the sweetest genius side of C, S, and N and then Y! 44 years on and I still smile…..
Don’t You Know Yockomo ~ Huey ‘Piano’ Smith And His Clowns
Koom-ba-lay-hey (koom-ba-lay-hey)
Two-way-pocky-way (two-way-pocky-way)
Hidey-hidey-hidey-ho (hidey-hidey-hidey-ho)
Don’t you knock Yockomo (don’t you know Yockomo)
Ling-ting-ting (ling-ting-ting)
Hey-ay-oh (hey-ay-oh)
….with lyrics like that you gotta love this one, so says this fan of all things Dave Bartholomew, Huey ‘Piano’ Smith and N’Awlins! Also a rollicking little number to roll away the Hump Day with!
The Dark End of the Street ~ James Carr
I think this is is THE quintessential version of this tune…yeah ok but ol’Geezer’s like me say stuff like that….tangents and tumbles…I was thinking yesterday about meeting up with Dan Penn — which lead to this fantastic song which. Over the years I have seen performers as diverse as Aretha, Elvis to Julie Andrews and Celine Dion do The Dark End of the Street, and each time I was thinking how Mr. Penn nailed it! And Mr. Carr, well he was as good as Otis or at least for awhile he was in my books….so The Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner selects for the tune of the day…hell this is one of my desert island discs for sure! Cheers now!

Do Right Woman ~ The Flying Burrito Brothers
Great tune written by one of the greatest song writing duo’s of the 20th Century, not hyperbole at all read the entries, and done by one of those bands of mythic fame proportions, another of the Ol’Geezer’s personal music history’s golden moments, and….I could go on but will spare you the hippie country dude reminiscences….get the album (vinyl, yeah of course) and play it with a bottle of Jack or Jim close by! This is my antidote for the 40th anniversary of the release of Exile On Main Street. There was a little concert a couple of years back now here in London by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham where I got a chance to chat with Dan about writing this one with Chips.
Just a few hums and ravers for this fine Sunday…feels like summer is finally going to make it to ol’Blighty….warming me bones….hehehe….

Memphis Soul Stew ~ King Curtis (et al)
Sunday selections are usually either Jazz, Classical and or Instrumentals…but I was sipping the old Pimms and was hit for a need of King Curtis mood!!!
So sending this along to you and wishing you some sun before the manic Monday hits!
Over the years I look back at certain concerts as being “the ones” and seeing King Curtis live in New York was one of those. It was this same line-up (Billy Preston, Bernard “Pretty” Perdie and Cornell Dupree) and it was a knock out night! If you like this or just a tad interested get this on vinyl as it is warm and one of the only ‘live’ albums I have ever liked. Cheers now from the Filmwell Papers’ Music Corner selection for a Sunday, as ever for your considerations.
