Witchcraft Frank Sinatra

Witchcraft ~ Frank Sinatra

Folks who have been around the Flimwell Papers’ for awhile no that I don’t go for the obvious…you know Blue Christmas done all Elvis like and the same goes for the other great pagan high holy days.  But somehow this year a song that every once in awhile my Dad would dust off the sheet music he had for this tune and play it for my Mum.  He would end with a big smile and they would hug —- so I played this for Mum during her leaving time —- she burst out laughing that it was too perfect….your Dad always hit some dramatic off key stuff….Bless’em both.  It’s the Monday Got The Witchcraft Thang from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner!

The Tarantulas “Tarantula” (2:05 - 1960)

A very worthy reblog this All Hallows’ Eve & the eve of the eve for Dios de los Muertos!

The Tarantulas “Tarantula” (2:05 - 1960)

What would Halloween be like without some spiders!?!?

Fortunately for us “The Tarantulas” give us these 2 creepy instrumentals from 1960 and now i give them to you… Just in time for the Hell-A-Day!

As for the band: The Tarantulas first recorded as the Spyders and had some personnel changes before changing their name. Band members included Bobby Tucker, Fred Crook, Dan Rains, Sammy Creason, and Bill English. The Tarantulas’ best known song is “Tarantula,” and they recorded several other songs including “Like Spellbound” and “Kaw Liga.” “Tarantula” was recorded at Fernwood studio in Memphis ca. 1960 and was released as a single (Atlantic-2102 b/w “Black Widow”). This song is included on the CD Fernwood Rock N Roll. After Bill Black passed away in 1965, Bobby Tucker became the lead for the Bill Black Combo and the group, which incorporated other Tarantulas members, recorded until the 1970s.

Off The Hook The Rolling Stones

Off The Hook ~ The Rolling Stones

There is curl to Mick’s lip, a rollin’ swagger in Keith’s guitar playing….naw these guys were cool and because many older than I just wanted the “cute” Beatles in their suits and all…well, I just had to love the Stones more.  I have posted up tunes from this album before and will some more ‘cause it’s the album that helped me find some of the greats they covered on hear and who weren’t getting played on any radio’s in my part of a very boring world.  This is the Wednesday is a Wicked One selection from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner.  Cheers now….

I Can't Keep From Crying, Sometimes Ten Years After

I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometimes ~ Ten Years After

Ten Years After is one of the bands I trucked equipment & stuff for — so I guess that I feel they are one of the bands from the second wave of the so-called Brit invasion of American music who have been left off the pages of recent peering back.  The song was written by Al Kooper and they do such a great trippy Blues feel here that it makes my list of forgotten gems of yesteryear!  It’s also one the did a live almost 18 minute version….tell the soundboard guy to go for burgers for the band we used to laugh and then do it.  So here they are the Monday Got the Hippy Trippy Blues selection of the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner.

Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody AbyBapGospel

I Said I Wasn’t Gonna Tell Nobody ~Abyssinian Baptist Gospel Choir

It’s a fitting song for a Sunday pick from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner and one that I listened to more than a few times over the last few weeks.

It was while being with Mum during her last days that we talked about very” specific styles of music and it’s purpose.  When we came to Gospel, particularly the kind heard here on this track, she just smiled and said, ” You don’t want to argue with God who evokes this kind of singing,” smiling she added, “Happy is how I want to be celebrated and remembered at my funny’eral!”

I’d add that she had little exposure to such joyous music in her life.

I'Ve Got Dreams To Remember Otis Redding

I’ve Got Dreams To Remember ~ Otis Redding

So the Saturday Got Soul from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner’s pick is taking it down a notch or two but oh how Otis wrings out each phrase with deep down heartache…..you’re left with the dreams — some bravado but you know by the end he’ll be a broke down man!  Been there and got this song to remind….and yes I saw him do this live….

Otis could read out, reach deep and take you for the full emotional ride that is Southern Soul.
