Bald Head Professor Longhair

Bald Head ~ Professor Longhair (aka Roy “Bald Head” Byrd and as ‘Fess)

Not strictly a Blues at all…but that Rhumba style, ‘Fess’ sense humour and my hankerin’ to be in the Crescent City make this the audio Blues selection of the day…beaming as I hear hit those 88’s!  What a genius of the keyboard!  The fidelity of this one is a little off because it’s the original 1949 cut off a French re-issue.  But it’s a Selection for Monday Got the Smilin’ Blues from the Flimwell Papers Music Corner — “Black or white, local or out-of-town, they all had Longhair’s music in common. Just that mambo-rhumba boogie thing.” —Allen Toussaint

Red Dust Ryuichi Sakamoto
Ryuichi Sakamoto ~ Red Dust (from the Little Buddha Soundtrack)

I have enjoyed the lush, almost too sweet, orchestrations of Mr. Sakamoto for some time now.  I remember Yellow Magic Orchestra days and saw them preform in  reformation concert Tokyo when I was there in ‘89 —- this is one fine little film and the soundtrack helps paint the picture.  It’s the Sunday for Soundtracks of our Lives selection from the Flimwell Papers Music Corner!

Boogaloo Down Broadway Fantastic Johnny C

Boogaloo Down Broadway ~ The Fantastic Johnny C.

Yeah boogaloo down Broadway….Roehampton and Erskine too!  A geographical joke Toronto based but this was our Saturday night on the town cry…we were a couple of country lads loose in the big city.  So this song will always be current in my library of song memories.  And it’s the Saturday Got Soul selection from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner.   Poor old Johnny C didn’t have such a fantastic career after this big boogy’in hit but he do a really nice take on (She’s) Some Kind Of Wonderful.  Check that one out too.  Cheers and peace y’all!

Dreaming Cream

Dreaming ~ Cream

I like oddball tracks and this one suits…never gets the “airplay” of Cream’s more herculean efforts but this one is there….I saw them do it in concert and it resides close to the bone that is soul.

Dreaming…it’s what I’m off to do…so the is the Friday Fresh as Cream selection from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner…peace y’all!

Friday On My Mind The Easybeats

Friday On My Mind ~ The Easybeats

Just because it’s late and tomorrow the Eagle flies….for all the unsung who plug and plod away in the music biz factory aka the Tower of Song but who do not “make it big” but toil for the love of the craft!  The Easybeats often little more than a footnote, a brief flutter of the pages of Pop music history…but I did love their earnest and honest attempts!!!

The Thursday Got It Right selection from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner…peace y’all!

It's Raining Irma Thomas

It’s Raining ~ Irma Thomas

The Queen of New Orleans Soul nails this one and she did it live a few months and ago here in London and it was nothing short of heroic!  I’m sitting here wishing I was in my beloved Crescent City for Jazz Fest….this is a dandy sub though….

~Sending out to all who have a little heart ache that needs amendin’ tonight from the Flimwell Papers Music Corner…the sun will shine again…don’t fret now!

My Baby Gives It Away Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane

My Baby Gives It Away ~  Ronnie Lane and Pete Townshend

It’s such a little gem of an album, Rough Mix and highlights the loves of Ronnie and Pete oh so very well.  On this track Charlie Watts just nails it…no need for huge athletic drumming ego displays here…just a solid groove….and that’s Eric Clapton here and there on Dobro!  No it’s not a Blues tune but it came from a blue time.  It’s 1976 and we were all tired and not knowing where the next going was coming from.  So this album was a huge surprise for a Who fan such as I…took me 30 years to really find it again and love it!   The Monday Got Some Bluesy feel to it selection of the Flimwell Papers Music Corner.  Oh, I was at that last concert of The Who in Toronto in ‘78 with Keith on the skins…it was his last time to play with them!
