I first heard this fine little tune while sitting in the backyard watching clouds make shapes for me — it’s part of my therapy to lay flat on the “warm” table in the little glass conservatory we have and just let it all roll by — this song got me to thinking ever so slowly about things. Any song that can do that is a worthy pick for Tuesday’s Get Up and Cheer Life from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner. Peace, love and laying flat to y’all!

I Can’t Quit You Baby ~ Otis Rush (The Otis Rush Blues Band)

Oh yes…a stonkin’ Classic this! Between 1956 and 1958, guitarist Otis Rush recorded a string of hits for Chicago’s Cobra Records label, but it all started with “I Can’t Quit You Baby.” A slow, powerful twelve-bar blues song written and produced by the great Willie Dixon for Rush, the guitarist was spurred on by Dixon to deliver a passionate performance that has stood for the ages. Covered by many but all owe this original so much — I never got to see Otis in his prime —- I’d’ve still been in short pants — but I did see him early on in the 60’s do this and bring the house down. Funny how time lets the little gems shine ever so brightly — I used to play this song for folks and they skipped it or put it down — to me it’s one of George’s little bits of genius, part this little that, a three way mix between jazz waltz, folk song, and late sixties psychedelia and all George! And I loved the rhythm in this one I first heard it in a little cafe in south London so many years ago! Grits Ain’t Groceries ~ Little Milton

Little Milton aka Milton Campbell was one the best live singers I ever saw. I saw him in Ann Arbor twice and then in Chicago where he was killin’ it. He had the strongest voice I’ve ever heard. I mean, the man had incredible control, power and emotion. A rare gift in a Blues singer and though this song is more R’n’B slash Soul it’s still the Blues to me which makes it the Monday Got The Blues selection from the Flimwell Papers’ Music Corner!
